Basecamp Kyūshū was always about more than landscape and production. La Cofu grew from that same sensibility. The obi and kimono fabrics used in every La Cofu bag are sourced here, in and around Itoshima. The tea ceremony practice traces back to Saga Prefecture — one of the birthplaces of Japanese tea culture. This is where it all started. Basecamp Kyūshū a toujours été plus qu'un décor. In Japanese culture, textiles have never been mere utilitarian objects. Kimonos, obis, and precious fabrics carried family lineage, a sense of the seasons, and artistic intention. A single bolt of fabric could take months to weave and generations to wear. As these textiles aged, they were not discarded — they were passed on, reshaped into new forms, treated as living archives of a life already lived.
古布 — kofu — traditionally refers to textiles that are preserved and reused over time. Beyond the material, it reflects a broader sensibility: objects, gestures, and traditions evolve through use and reinterpretation. They carry memory. They do not disappear — they transform.
This sensibility lies at the heart of La Cofu. Not as a concept to explain, but as a practice to embody. The textiles of the atelier, the tea ceremony on tatami — all stem from the same refusal to treat things as disposable. La Cofu extends this through cultural experiences: tea ceremony, matcha & wagashi, onigiri craft, and handmade bags from vintage kimono and obi fabrics.
Dans la culture japonaise, les textiles n'ont jamais été de simples objets utilitaires. Les kimonos, les obis et les précieux tissus portaient la lignée familiale, le sens des saisons et une intention artistique. Un seul rouleau de tissu pouvait prendre des mois à tisser et des générations à porter. En vieillissant, ces textiles n'étaient pas jetés — ils étaient transmis, traités comme des archives vivantes d'une vie déjà vécue.
古布 — kofu — désigne traditionnellement les textiles préservés et réutilisés dans le temps. Au-delà du matériau, cela reflète une sensibilité plus large : les objets, les gestes et les traditions évoluent par l'usage. Ils portent la mémoire. Ils ne disparaissent pas — ils se transforment.

Silk, brocade, hand-dyed cotton — fabrics that once carried another life. As part of the La Cofu Atelier experience during residencies, participants choose their own fabric from the vintage collection brought from Japan and create their own piece. Finished bags are also available for purchase on-site. Soie, brocart, coton teint à la main — des tissus qui portaient autrefois une autre vie.
